Our time is coming to an end
What's happened since last time ...
We had our pig roast. The dinner was awesome. Much to my disappointment we didn't get to see the pig, but Margaret (Dave's mom) doesn't share my opinion. She doesn't like it when her food arrives with it's head, eyes & tail (like her fish did the other night)!!!
Our trip to Paxos was great. The seaplane flight was fun. It gave us a great view of the island of Corfu and Paxos. Paxos is a small quiet island. It seems that although May is the start of the "season" that it's still early and lots of things aren't fully open or operating, partially due to demand and partially due to the slow start in the weather earlier this month. As a result upon landing in Gaios on Paxos there were no boats to Antipaxos to be found. We wandered the town for a while, had lunch in the town square, then took a taxi down to the next town (There are only three on the island) Lakka. If you can believe Lakka was even quieter than Gaios. We wandered through a couple of blocks up a hill and down to a beautiful bay. There were only a handful of people there. We swam and sunbathed for a few hours until it was time to make our way back up into Lakka to meet our taxi for the trip back to the seaplane for our return trip. A wonderful relaxing quality couple time. (I was starting to get tired of doing everything "en mass" with others)
Yesterday Dave and I struck out on our own for a road trip down to the south end of Corfu Island. With Dave driving and me navigating we took the roads less travelled driving through beautiful little villages in the hills and along the sea. Had lunch at an Italian place in Agios Georges (St.Georges) on the cliff's edge overlooking the Ionian Sea towards Italy listening to the crashing waves. Very romantic for mid-day. From there we continued south to Cavos ... ugh -- I wouldn't recommend it unless you're 20 years old and looking for partying & sex. A very gaudy / seedy town on the beach. From there we headed north along the shore line towards Corfu town. More quaint little fishing villages. Navigation went well except at the end. I missed the turn we wanted to take the middle road back and ended up in the outskirts of Corfu Town ... traffic. Had a heck of a time turning around and finding our way back onto a main road but we ended up back on the outer road which we'd used before. All was well as we headed back to Paleokastritsa, the village we've been staying in. Capped the night off with a romantic dinner for two over looking another bay/small marina. A fabulous day all round.
Today we had a slow morning, walked up the hill at the end of our village to the monastery only to discover that it was closed from 1-3pm --- we arrived at 1:15pm. Not a disaster, the view was worth it. We then drove back towards Corfu town to attemp to find a little church in the bay. After a few failed attempts we found our way to the right bay and took a few pictures. From there we drove around the bay to Gouvia for a late lunch at some beachside bar/restaurant before returning back "home" for a late afternoon nap. I really don't know how I'm going to start back at work next week ... could be an issue as 6am comes early!!!
We've just finished dinner with the family and have parted ways. Tomorrow is our last day. Planning on packing and lazying around the beach if the sun comes out. It's been nice these past few days but the forecast is for possible showers tomorrow. In any case Dave's parents are still here so at least we can put our stuff in their room and have showers before leaving tomorrow evening. Our flight is late - doesn't leave until 11:20pm and we have a very long layover at Gatwick before our 12:15pm flight home to Calgary on Friday. The trip's not going to do much for getting back into a normal schedule. Oh well that's next week and for now we're enjoying the last hours of our vacation.
